| Flowerbed preparation and planting | | |
- Mark the area that is to become the flowerbed.
- Dig 12 to 15 inches of soil out of the flowerbed. Break apart large clods.
- Blend 1 part Treeland Nurseries mulch and 1 part peat moss with 2 parts soil removed from flowerbed. If the original soil is very high in clay or shows signs of poor drainage, add 1 part sand to the blended flowerbed soil mix.
- Blend in:
- 4 pounds of bone meal or triple-super-phosphate
- 3 to 5 pounds of IonateTM soil acidifier or soil sulfur
- and 2 pounds of Gardener's SpecialTM fertilizer
- for every 100 square feet of flowerbed into flowerbed soil mix.
- Fill in flowerbed with blended flowerbed soil mix.
- Soak flowerbed to pack and settle soil mix. Leave flowerbed undisturbed overnight.
- Plant your flowerbed with selected flowers at recommended spacing. DO NOT COVER TOP OF ROOT BALL. Water plant within 30 minutes of being planted.
- Spread 1 inch of organic mulch, shredded cedar, or bark chips over flowerbed to add a nice touch and help keep the roots cool.
- Soak the flowerbed. Program irrigation timer to water the flowerbed daily for the first 7 days, then as needed:
- Summer, once every 3 days.
- Spring and Fall, once every 4 to 5 days.
- Winter, once every 5 to 7 days.
- After 30 days, re-apply IonateTM soil acidifier or soil sulfur and Gardener's SpecialTM fertilizer.
- Soak the flowerbed; then resume regular watering schedule.
- At Spring planting, till into flowerbed:
- 1 bag of Treeland Nurseries mulch or OmniTM
- 1 cubic foot of peat moss
- 1 to 3 pounds of IonateTM soil acidifier or soil sulfur
- and 1 pound of Gardener's SpecialTM fertilizer
- for every 50 square feet for flowerbed.
- Rake soil smooth.
- Soak flowerbed to pack and settle soil mix. Leave flowerbed undisturbed overnight.
- Plant your flowerbed with selected flowers at recommended spacing. DO NOT COVER TOP OF ROOT BALL. Water plant within 30 minutes of being planted.
